Water Jet Cutters - Here's Some Time Savers as We Spring Ahead

We love that extra hour of daylight that we get when we spring ahead for Daylight Savings Time, but losing an hour can be tough, especially when your water jet shop is busy keeping up with all those orders.

To help you make up for lost time, we've put together a few quick tips to maximize your waterjet system's productivity.

1. NEST Parts - Take advantage of your waterjet nesting software to nest parts as tightly as possible. This saves you time loading and unloading parts and it saves you material.  Talk to your Jet Edge representative to make sure you have the latest nesting software.

2. STACK Parts - Waterjets can cut through stacked layers of thin material in one pass.

3. Up Your UHP to 75,000 PSI - Jet Edge X-Stream-powered waterjet systems cut parts as much as 50% faster.  Ask your Jet Edge representative how you can upgrade your UHP pump to 75,000 psi.

4. Add Cutting Heads - Why settle for just one waterjet cutting head when you can have 12?

5. Maintain Your Waterjet Machine - Driving around on bald tires is a very bad idea, and so is neglecting waterjet system maintenance.  Follow the maintenance guidelines in your manual, and be sure to take advantage of Jet Edge's free customer waterjet training classes.

WATERJETS AND ENTREPRENEURS - Jet Edge Hosts Future Business Leaders

Today Jet Edge had the opportunity to open our doors to some of tomorrow's business leaders.  We had a group of nine high school students in from the Wright County Technical Center's CEO program, Creating Entrepreneurial Opportunities.

These students are part of an exciting new program that takes them out of the classroom and into local businesses so they can learn what it takes to become a successful entrepreneur. As part of the year-long class, each student starts up their own business and learns hands-on from their own successes and failures.

During their visit to Jet Edge, the students learned how waterjet technology is used to create many of the products they use every day, from food products to auto parts.  They also had the opportunity to see a live water jet cutting demonstration in our test lab.

It's always fun to work with young people who are excited about their future.  We hope they all start successful businesses right here in Wright County!

Waterjets Blast Away Rubber from Airport Runways, Remove Stripes from Highways, Clean Ship Decks

Waterjets make quick work out of the world's toughest cleaning applications.

They blast away rubber from airport runways, zip through layers of corrosion and old coatings on ship decks, and remove old highway stripes in the blink of an eye.

And unlike a sandblaster, they do all this hard work without kicking up tons of dust - making them ideal for sensitive marine environments, as well as a worker-friendly alternative to sandblasters.

Jet Edge's Ultra Deckblaster mows over the competition by combining waterjet blasting technology with the simplicity of a walk-behind lawnmower style design.  Instead of a blade, the Deckblaster features a spray bar with multiple waterjets that are pressurized to 55,000+ psi by a Jet Edge hydraulic intensifier pump.

Waterjet vs Laser or Plasma

People frequently ask us, why should I go with a water jet system versus a laser or a plasma cutter?

Here's what we tell them...

Waterjets cut virtually any material.  The same machine can cut rubber, foam, steel, Inconel®, granite, titanium, zinc and much more.  You name it, waterjet can probably cut it.  There are very few materials that can't be cut with waterjet such as diamonds or tempered glass. See waterjet applications here.

Waterjets cut without heat.  They don't leave behind HAZ, slag or burnt edges.  Hold a waterjet cut part next to a plasma cut part or a laser cut part and you can see the difference for yourself.

Waterjets won't stink up your shop.  Who wants to spend the day breathing in nasty fumes?

Is waterjet right for your application?  Contact Jet Edge today and we would be happy to help you make that call.

Water Jet Cutting Stories - Looking Back to 2012

We like to celebrate "Throwback Thursday" at Jet Edge.  We're always so busy moving forward, that sometimes it's nice to take a look back to celebrate how far we've come.

I dug through our archives of magazine articles about water jet cutting, and found this gem from 2012, "Cutting Parts at the Speed of NASCAR" in Fab Shop Magazine Direct.

I hope you enjoy it!

Water Jet Cutting Carbon Composite Race Car Parts

Jet Edge recently water jet cut carbon composite parts for the University of Minnesota Gopher Motorsports Formula SAE Team.

We cut the material at 55,000 PSI with an abrasive waterjet, using a .010/.030 orifice/nozzle combination and 1/2 lb of garnet abrasive per minute.  We were being very cautious as the students did not have a lot of material to spare, so we cut it at 35 ipm, but we certainly could have cut the material faster.

Watch a video of the waterjet cutting in our test lab:

The carbon composite parts make up the spar support system of the front wing of the racecar. Other composite carbon parts will be bonded between frame members to increase rigidity.

We're very excited to help Gopher Motorsports build their car.  We look forward to cheering them on at the Formula SAE race at Michigan International Speedway.

Read more about how Jet Edge is helping Gopher Motorsports be more competitive with our ultra high pressure waterjet technology.
