Jet Edge Water Jet Systems Cut Donuts in a Jiffy

In the spirit of National Doughnut Day, aka National Donut Day, we water jet cut doughnuts with a Jet Edge waterjet cutting system.

Water jet cut doughnuts and coffee.
The waterjet did a fantastic job cutting the doughnuts, leaving a very clean edge and no crumbs.  You may think a water jet would get the donuts wet, but it travels so fast that the donuts were just fine.

As a comparison, we cut some doughnuts with a knife. The waterjet cut faster and better.  The knife-cut doughnuts were crumbly and not nearly as appealing as the water jet cut doughnuts.

Ultra High Pressure water jet is commonly used for commercial food cutting applications. Waterjet is sanitary, never needs sharpening or cleaning, and cuts without heat.

Jet Edge would love the opportunity to work with your company to integrate waterjets into your production equipment.

Water Jet Cutting Foam Pool Noodle at 75,000 PSI

After a long Minnesota winter, we're ready for summer here at Jet Edge waterjet systems!

We had some fun in our test lab water cutting this foam noodle at 75,000 psi.

As you can see, water only waterjet is fantastic for cutting foam.  It cuts without heat so it doesn't melt the foam, leaves a very small kerf and does not smash the material.

If you have a foam cutting application that could benefit from waterjet, contact us today to find out how Jet Edge waterjets can help you increase productivity and cut costs.

WATERJETS AND ENTREPRENEURS - Jet Edge Hosts Future Business Leaders

Today Jet Edge had the opportunity to open our doors to some of tomorrow's business leaders.  We had a group of nine high school students in from the Wright County Technical Center's CEO program, Creating Entrepreneurial Opportunities.

These students are part of an exciting new program that takes them out of the classroom and into local businesses so they can learn what it takes to become a successful entrepreneur. As part of the year-long class, each student starts up their own business and learns hands-on from their own successes and failures.

During their visit to Jet Edge, the students learned how waterjet technology is used to create many of the products they use every day, from food products to auto parts.  They also had the opportunity to see a live water jet cutting demonstration in our test lab.

It's always fun to work with young people who are excited about their future.  We hope they all start successful businesses right here in Wright County!

Water Jet or Abrasive Jet?

The term "water jet" is commonly used to describe both water-only waterjets and abrasive waterjets (abrasivejets).

Water only waterjet cutting YOXO® toys.
A pure UHP waterjet cuts soft materials with a powerful stream of water that has been pressurized up to 75,000 psi+ and forced through a tiny orifice.  Pure water only waterjets are used to cut foods such as bread, ham and carrots; as well as paper products, cardboard, carpet, foam, rubber and insulation.  They are frequently integrated into custom food processing systems, water slitting systems and shuttle systems.  Waterjets also are used like a pressure washer on steroids to blast away old coatings, paint and corrosion.

Abrasivejet cutting stainless steel at JACQUET Midwest.
When cutting hard material such as metal or stone, an abrasive (usually garnet) is added to the cutting stream, creating an abrasivejet that can cut precise parts from virtually any material, from granite, quartz and marble to difficult-to-machine super alloys such as Inconel®.

Jet Edge Bringing Latest CNC Waterjets to EASTEC

Jet Edge, Inc., a leading manufacturer of ultra-high pressure waterjet technology, is exhibiting its latest precision CNC waterjet cuttingsystems at EASTEC, May 12-14 at the Eastern States Exposition in West Springfield, Mass. Look for Jet Edge in Booth 1462.

During EASTEC, Jet Edge will perform live 5-axis abrasive waterjet cutting demonstrations on its premiere 90,000 psi (6200 bar) EDGE X-5® 5-axis waterjet with Aquavision Di control and Closed Loop Filtration System.  The waterjet manufacturer also will showcase its new low-cost BOSS-CUTTER™ waterjet system, and its 90,000 psi X-Stream intensifier pumps.

Jet Edge’s EDGE X-5® 5-axis waterjet cuts precise taper-free parts from virtually any material.  The system is capable of cutting sophisticated 3D parts such as impellers and bevels up to 50°.   This workhorse waterjet system is designed to provide years of dependable service in harsh industrial environments.  Its sturdy design separates the motion system from the catcher tank, eliminating vibration and ensuring maximum part quality.  The EDGE X-5 utilizes the Aquavision® Di industrial PC controller.  It is ball-screw driven for optimal precision and features direct-couple AC brushless digital servo motors and single or double carriages. Critical bearing components are protected with heavy metal covers with brush seals and positive air pressure. The Jet Edge EDGE X-5 waterjet machine is available in many sizes, from 5’x5’ (1500 mm x1500 mm) to 24’x13.’ (7300 mm x 3900 mm) An optional second cutting head can be added to double productivity.

Designed especially for cost-conscious shops with limited floor space, Jet Edge’s BOSS-CUTTER waterjet system cuts parts up to 6” thick from virtually any material. The BOSS-CUTTER is available in two sizes: 40”x40” (1000 mm x 1000 mm) or 60” X 60” (1500 mm x 1500 mm). It can be configured for both abrasive waterjet cutting and water-only cutting (abrasive is added when cutting hard materials such as metals; soft materials such as foam can typically be cut with water only). The system comes standard with a 30hp Jet Edge ECO-JET direct-drive pump, but can be upgraded to any of Jet Edge’s 55,000 psi (3800 bar) pumps. Jet Edge offers both direct-drive pumps or hydraulic intensifier pumps, available in 30-280hp models.  The BOSS-CUTTER is controlled with a Windows® PC and includes FlashCut Pro-Series Stepper Controller, FlashCutCNC software and IGEMS path generation software.

Jet Edge’s 100hp, 90KSI (75kw, 6200 bar), X-Stream® xP90-100 waterjet intensifier pump is capable of producing 90KSI (6200 bar) and supports 75KSI (5200 bar) continuous operating pressure.  The X-Stream achieves much faster cutting speeds and drastically lowers operating costs compared to traditional 60KSI (4100 bar) water jet pumps, enabling users to increase productivity and reduce part costs.

The X-Stream produces 50% more pressure than a 60KSI (4100 bar) intensifier pump, resulting in a 40-50% increase in productivity for many materials. Compared to a 60KSI (4100 bar) pump, typical operating pressures of 75KSI (5200 bar) use 30% less water, 30% less power, and up to 50% less abrasive, resulting in a 40% reduction in operating costs. The xP90-100 is capable of producing flow rates of 1.45gpm (5.49 L/m) and supports up to a .017” (.43 mm) orifice.  Fittings and tubing are rated for 100KSI (6900 bar). The X-Stream is backed by nearly 10 years of extensive research and development in hyper-pressure technology.  The X-Stream also is available in a 50hp (37kw) model.

Jet Edge offers the widest range of waterjet pumps in the industry.  Its pumps include hydraulic intensifier pumps and direct drive pumps.  36KSI (2500 bar), 60KSI (4100 bar) and 90KSI (6200 bar) models are available from 30-280hp (22-208kw).  Electric and diesel models are available.

Waterjet Closed Loop Water Filtration System
Jet Edge's Waterjet Closed Loop Filtration System eliminates the need for a drain by filtering and reusing water. A closed-loop filtration system prevents the introduction of hazardous materials into drainage systems, protects the waterjet pump, maximizes orifice life and reduces water/sewage costs.

Jet Edge Celebrates 30 Years in Water Jet Industry

Jet Edge, Inc., a leading manufacturer of ultra-high pressure waterjet technology, is celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2014.
Founded in 1984, Jet Edge entered the waterjet industry during the industry’s infancy and has grown to become one of the largest and most respected manufacturers of ultra-high pressure waterjet technology in the world.  Jet Edge waterjets are used in a wide range of industries around the world, including automotive, aerospace, defense, industrial manufacturing, food production, and machine and job shops.  Jet Edge’s extensive product line includes precision waterjet cutting systems, waterjet pumps, and mobile waterjet cutting and surface preparation systems.
“We’ve come a long way since 1984,” said Jude Lague, Jet Edge president. “We’ve seen waterjet technology evolve from its 36,000 psi (2500 bar) water-only past to today’s sophisticated and highly precise 5-axis and robotic systems that can reach pressures exceeding 90,000 psi (6200 bar).  Back in 1984, or even in 1994, waterjet was such a niche technology that many people hadn’t even heard of it.  Today, it’s as common as any machine tool, and is used to manufacture countless everyday items, from sliced fruit to titanium joint implants.”
Lague credits Jet Edge’s success to the company’s commitment to helping customers solve their toughest manufacturing problems and willingness to engineer custom solutions.

“We were born problem solvers,” Lague said. “Our company’s founder Chris Possis couldn’t find a satisfactory waterjet pump, so he built his own.  Since then, we’ve had the opportunity to help hundreds of customers improve their manufacturing processes and we’ve responded to some of the world’s greatest crises, including the Kuwait oil fires, the Kobe earthquakes, and the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.”
Lague noted that Jet Edge’s success in the competitive waterjet industry would not have been possible without the support of its loyal customers, dedicated employees and industry friends.

Material Handling Equipment Manufacturer Anderson-Crane Company Installs Jet Edge Waterjet System

Jet Edge Inc. is pleased to announce that Anderson-Crane Company, a world leading material handling equipment manufacturer, has installed a Jet Edge waterjet cutting system at its fabrication facility in Litchfield, Minn.  With its new waterjet system, Anderson-Crane is now capable of cutting complex finished-quality parts from virtually any material.

Anderson-Crane Company manufactures a wide variety of material handling equipment, including screw conveyors, screw feeders and bucket elevators, specializing in custom projects. Anderson-Crane conveyors are used around the world to move everything from chocolate to taconite.  The company also fabricates hoppers, bins and gates. In addition to manufacturing its own products, Anderson-Crane operates as a local job shop, building structural equipment for local businesses and molds for the plastics industry. It also offers metal repair services.

Founded in 1950 as an offshoot of its Minneapolis-based sister company Anderson-Crane Rubber Company, Anderson-Crane Company has been steadily growing its fabrication facility and capabilities for more than 60 years.

Company spokesman Rob Crane attributes his company’s growth and customer loyalty to its unsurpassed commitment to quality and its expertise in manufacturing custom material handling equipment.

“Anderson-Crane has become recognized as a leader in quality in the material handling business, delivering products with a very high attention to detail and finish,” Crane commented.  “We have decades-long customers that include Fortune 500 companies and major multi-nationals. We pay very close attention to our products’ fit and finish, assuring all dimensions are precise and weldments are cleaned.  Customers call on us when they have a special conveyor design that can’t be found in a catalog. We treat our customers’ projects as unique equipment that deserves close attention to detail and quality.”

This meticulous attention to quality is what compelled Anderson-Crane to install a precision waterjet cutting system, Crane noted.  Before installing its water jet, the company had been cutting parts on a CNC plasma machine and outsourcing work to waterjet shops.

“Due to our high demand for quality, we have spent a lot of time cleaning parts that come off our plasma machine,” Crane recalled.  “We decided to buy a waterjet because of its clean cut; our goal is to reduce rework and part cleaning time.  We wanted a system that cut parts with little or no edge cleanup required. A laser proved too costly and a waterjet allowed us to cut metal (our main working material), but also softer material such as gasket. We had been outsourcing waterjet cutting and were always satisfied with the edge quality and easy assembly of its finished parts. With the waterjet we’re able to move from raw material to finished parts in as little time as possible while improving our products’ quality and precision.”

Anderson-Crane’s new waterjet cutting capabilities will help the company maintain its competitive edge, Crane noted.

“Manufacturers in the material handling industry do not focus on the same level of quality as we do,” he said. “Adding a waterjet to our fabrication process set the quality bar even higher. Our goal is to minimize the time it takes to go from raw material to assembly. As we implement this, we’re striving to consistently deliver a product with outstanding quality.  We’re setting Anderson-Crane even further apart in an industry where quality and workmanship are often afterthoughts.”

In addition to improving its own products, Anderson-Crane also plans to grow its job shop business by offering waterjet cutting services.  It plans to cut primarily mild and stainless steel and occasionally rubber gasket and UHMW.

Anderson-Crane’s Jet Edge Mid Rail Gantry waterjet system features an 8’x13’ work envelope and SigmaNEST® Companion CAD/CAM nesting software to maximize material usage.  It is powered by a 60,000 psi, 50hp Jet Edge iP60-50 waterjet intensifier pump.  The system features an eco-friendly Ebbco closed-loop water filtration and chilling system that prolongs waterjet component life and reduces water consumption and sewage fees by recycling water.

Anderson-Crane decided to buy its waterjet specifically from Jet Edge for a variety of reasons, Crane noted.

“Jet Edge’s proximity to our shop is a unique benefit,” he said.  “Being close to the manufacturer for support and training is important to us. We also wanted a dual gantry design, which we see as a more robust design than cantilever models offered by other waterjet firms.”
