Speed Up Waterjet Low-Pressure Pierces, Run Multiple Waterjets at Various Pressures with Dual Pressure Valve

Jet Edge’s patented Dual Pressure Valve® greatly increases waterjet cutting productivity by allowing waterjet operators to control water pressure independent of the waterjet pump.

With the remotely-mounted Jet Edge Dual Pressure Valve, waterjet operators can run multiple waterjet tables simultaneously at various pressures with a single pump. Operators also can perform low-pressure piercing operations without waiting for the water jet pump to raise or lower to the desired pressure, saving time and reducing wear and tear on pump components.

The Jet Edge Dual Pressure Valve will operate with any manufacturer's water jet pump, waterjet cutting head, or waterjet cutting system, and is fully configurable for pressure change ratios. Connection points are standard 60,000 psi-type. The Dual Pressure Valve is pneumatically operated and must be used in conjunction with another normally closed on/off valve or cutting head.

Water Jet Machine Removes Coatings, Grease from Concrete Floors, Steel Decks

Jet Edge’s Ultra Deckblaster waterjet surface preparation machine uses ultra-high pressure waterjets to quickly blast away old paint, coatings, grease and dirt from steel decks and concrete floors without using hazardous chemicals.

Resembling a lawnmower, the self-propelled Ultra Deckblaster operates at pressures up to 55,000 psi (3,800 bar). Typical applications include removal of polyurethane paint or nonskid coatings from factory floors, ship decks, paint booths and parking ramps. The Ultra Deckblaster also removes accumulated spillage such as grease, oil and overspray.

The Ultra Deckblaster portable water jet system utilizes UHP water supplied by a Jet Edge waterjet intensifier pump. Hydraulic pressure activates the motor to spin the spray bar assembly and open a high-flow water valve supplying fluid to the manifolds. The water travels through a high-pressure on/off valve and high-speed swivel before entering the rotating spray bar. Multiple waterjet orifices direct UHP water over an 18” (46 cm) wide cleaning path as the machine advances. The spray bar accepts a variety of standard jet manifolds.

Operators have total control of the rotation speed, drive speed, forward/off/reverse, water and rotation on/off of the spray bar. Easily accessible knobs control forward/reverse and bar rotation speeds. A manually actuated valve does not allow operation of any function unless the safety lever is depressed. The hydraulic-powered wheel drive (self-propelled drive) offers additional operator control and comfort and can be easily disengaged for free-rolling applications. The spray bar height is adjustable.

Metal Service Center Jacquet Installs 21'X13' Waterjet Table

POTTSTOWN, PA. (August 21, 2009) -- Jet Edge, Inc., is pleased to announce that Jacquet Mid Atlantic of Pottstown, Pa., has installed Jet Edge’s new 21’X13’ large-format Mid Rail Gantry Waterjet System. The Mid Rail Gantry is the third Jet Edge waterjet system at Jacquet’s Mid Atlantic service center and the company’s sixth Jet Edge waterjet system nationwide.

Jacquet’s new Jet Edge Mid Rail Gantry water jet system features a 21’X13’ work envelope with a system design that easily accommodates overhead loading with the bridge clearing the tank. Jacquet equipped the waterjet table with two Jet Edge Permalign II abrasivejet cutting heads and a 100HP intensifier pump to increase productivity. They also added an optional mirroring package, independent programmable Z carriages, programmable height sensing, a fully-functional remote pendant, large-capacity bulk abrasive hopper, submerged cutting package, closed-loop water filtration system, and garnet removal system.

A subsidiary of Jacquet Metals of Lyon Saint Priest, France, Jacquet Mid Atlantic is one of four Jacquet metal service centers in North America. The company also has metal service centers in Houston, Racine, Wis., and Irvine, Calif.

Jacquet specializes in supplying and processing stainless steel and nickel alloys for OEMS, fabricators and machine shops that support primarily the oil and gas, power generation, pollution control systems and water purification industries. Jacquet’s North American service centers provide waterjet and plasma part cutting. The company stocks 19 different grades of stainless steel and nickel alloy plates in a wide variety of sizes and thicknesses.

“We have a very large inventory of stainless steel and nickel in many different grades, thicknesses and widths, and we are able to cut near net-shape parts,” said Jacquet CEO Terry Engle. “Having the combination of that, plus our fast turnaround has really helped our growth.”

When Jacquet opened its North American operations in 2006, Engle decided to install the largest waterjet cutting systems available on the market to meet a growing demand for large-format cold cutting. Over a two-year period, Engle installed massive Jet Edge Low Rail Gantries at each of his plants. With waterjet tables as large at 15’X22’, Jacquet can claim some of the largest waterjet cutting tables in North America.

“Because the tables are so large, we can hold extremely large plates up to 15’X21’,” Engle said. “We also have two cutting heads on each table, so we can process two plates simultaneously or utilize two heads on one nested plate of parts, doubling our productivity. This has gotten us some work because we can cut two parts at a time and reduce the cost and turn-around to the customer.”

Engle noted that waterjet is the ideal cutting method for most of his applications because it eliminates heat-affected zones (HAZ) and reduces the need for secondary finishing operations, which results in lower finished part costs for his customers. If a customer desires a polished near-finished part, Jacquet typically cuts the part from polished plates. This saves time and money for customers because it eliminates the need for them to polish individual parts.

“Whenever we have customers who need small parts or tight tolerances or special sketch cuts, we push them toward waterjet. Also, when we are cutting heavy plate, we try to convince them to go with waterjet because they can save on material. When you cut with plasma, you have to add additional kerf and material for machining. Waterjet saves on material and machining. When roughing material to allow for machining afterwards, waterjet does not put any heat into the part, allowing the material to be machined much easier and saving on tooling costs.”

Engle decided to buy his waterjet systems from Jet Edge after extensively researching several waterjet manufacturers and interviewing Jet Edge’s references.

“I did a very thorough follow up with Jet Edge’s references,” he said. “They all spoke very highly of the reliability of the pump, technical service and Jet Edge’s on-time parts delivery. That was a big part of us picking Jet Edge. I also was very impressed with Jet Edge’s sales process and technical expertise. Jet Edge’s regional sales manager Scott Wirtanen had very strong technical knowledge of the machine and understood our application. He helped us pick the right machine and equipment for our application.”

Engle decided to buy his latest Jet Edge waterjet machine based on his satisfaction with Jet Edge’s equipment, service and training.

“We have run our other systems 16 hours a day or more for over two and a half years,” he said. “Anytime we have had issues, Jet Edge has been very good at offering technical solutions to help us out. Jet Edge’s lifetime training program also has been very successful for us. We have sent people to training at Jet Edge and we’ve had training here. It has been very valuable as we have added locations and new operators.”

Waterjets Increase Methane Well Productivity

Centura Oil Inc. of Minnetonka, Minn., is dramatically increasing oil and gas well productivity with its CenJet 90® 90º downhole waterjet cutting system.

Powered by a portable Jet Edge diesel-powered water jet intensifier pump, the CenJet 90® uses a 55,000psi waterjet cutter to quickly pierce through the well casing and cut multiple 8' to 10' long lateral perforations up to 10" in diameter into the surrounding coalseam. This unique waterjetting process can increase a coalbed methane well's production up to 300% by expanding its area of influence by 16' to 20' in diameter at multiple depths, said Centura Oil President Michael Uthe, who noted that the process typically pays for itself within a year.

According to Uthe, the CenJet 90® has successfully stimulated coalbed methane wells more than 3,400' deep in the San Juan Basin, New Mexico. The system is capable of cutting at depths greater than 4,000'. Centura Oil's CenJet 90® waterjet system can be used to stimulate any type of cased or uncased well, including coalbed methane, natural gas and oil. It works especially well in coalbed methane wells because it can cut through the coal seam much more effectively than traditional well stimulation methods. The process typically requires less than two days of site work.

The CenJet 90® consists of a modified Jet Edge Permalign II® abrasivejet cutting head that is coupled to coiled steel tubing and lowered down the wellbore. The cutting head is oriented at 90 degrees to the well casing and is brought up to pressure at precise depths to perforate the casing and surrounding formation. The powerful abrasive waterjet, which is capable of cutting 15" titanium, cuts a single perforation in San Juan Basin coal in about 15 minutes at 55,000 psi. During operation, the tool never leaves the wellbore.

Uthe said he decided to equip the CenJet 90® with a Jet Edge intensifier pump and to use a modified version of Jet Edge's waterjet cutting head because he needed dependable equipment that could stand up to a harsh remote environment.

"If I have 3,000 feet of hose downhole, and something breaks, I stand to lose a lot of money. I bought the Jet Edge waterjet intensifier pump after meeting [then Jet Edge President] Jerry Lague and getting several referrals from people who told me that Jet Edge was the most reliable pump on the market. The Jet Edge waterjet pump has been extremely dependable and Jet Edge's support has been excellent. I know that when I need to call Jet Edge, someone will answer. Even on Saturdays, I can get through to someone on Jet Edge's 24-hour emergency cell phone."

Centura Oil's waterjet well stimulation process is far more cost effective and environmentally friendly than conventional coalbed methane well completion and rehabilitation methods, Uthe noted.

"Conventional perforation operations are typically performed using a shaped charge," he explained. "The formation can experience damage due to the violent nature of the explosive charge. The CenJet 90®, on the other hand, washes and cleans as it is cutting, eliminating near well bore damage and increasing perforation depth by as much as three times that of conventional perforations.

"Conventional well completion and rehabilitation projects also typically require costly hydraulic fracturing to keep fractures open. The hydraulic fracturing process involves pumping chemical fluids and proppants, such as sand or ceramic beads, into the formation. To date, none of the coalbed methane wells stimulated by Centura Oil's waterjetting system have needed to be fracture stimulated."

Centura Oil's waterjet well stimulation process has numerous environmental benefits. Stimulating existing wells extends their lives and increases their productivity, reducing the need for energy companies to drill new wells. Since wells stimulated by the CenJet 90® have not required hydraulic fracturing, their owners have avoided those costs and potential damage to the formation. The CenJet 90® uses only four gallons of water and one pound of garnet abrasive per minute. Garnet is a natural stone that can be disposed of in a landfill. The effluent created by the waterjet cutting process consists of coal cuttings, garnet and water. It is flushed out of the well and discharged into a lined holding pond.

Centura Oil offers its waterjet well recompletion and production enhancement services worldwide and plans to expand into new well completions. In addition to providing well stimulation service, Centura Oil also sells its CenJet 90® waterjetting systems under a licensing agreement.

Michael Waltrip Racing Increases Waterjet Productivity 35%, Cuts Costs with 90KSI Waterjet Pump

Michael Waltrip Racing (MWR) reports that it has experienced dramatic water jet cutting productivity gains and cost reductions since powering its Jet Edge waterjet system with Jet Edge's 100hp 90,000 psi X-Stream waterjet intensifier pump in January.

"We've been seeing, across the board, a 35% improvement in cutting speed, plus we are using about 25% less garnet abrasive, and we have reduced our costs by 30%," said Nick Hughes, MWR's technical director.

"As an example, our spindles, which are one of our more complicated steering parts and cut from 2" 4140 steel, used to take 50-55 minutes to cut at 60,000 psi. Now we are cutting them in 30-44 minutes. Before we got the waterjet, it used to take three or four hours to rough cut them on a bandsaw. I also should note that about the same time we upgraded our pump, we changed suppliers for our spindle blanks. They use a much harder material that requires a slower cutting time. The X-Stream offset the increased cutting time.

"Another good example of a reduction in machining time would be our upper control arm plates that attach our front suspension arms to the chassis. These are cut from 1.5" thick steel and took about 1 hour and 25 minutes to cut two with the double heads and the old 60Kpsi pump. We can now cut two in about one hour with the double heads and the 90Kpsi pump."

Thanks to these increased cutting speeds, MWR has been able to reduce its waterjet operating hours from 60 to 65 hours per week to 40 to 50 hours per week, saving on labor and overhead, Hughes noted.

"From a throughput standpoint, we're able to push a lot more product through in the same period of time," he said. "This has freed up machine time so we can cut jigs and fixturing in addition to racecar parts. We're able to rough these out on the waterjet much faster than with conventional cutting tools."

By freeing up production time, Jet Edge's X-Stream waterjet pump also has helped MWR develop a side business building cars for other race teams, Hughes added.

"The X-stream has opened the door for more commercial opportunities," he said. "It helps bring the cost down and we're able to pass that down to the other teams. They are able to get a quality product at a lower price plus they can leverage off of MWR's engineering and manufacturing capabilities."

According to Hughes, MWR waterjets 250 parts for each of its racecars. The parts are cut from a wide variety of materials ranging from ¼" Nomex® to ½" steel, and include numerous panels, mounts and chassis components, plus duct work, windows, splitter panels and much more. MWR builds about 56 cars per year, which include the #55 NAPA AUTO PARTS Toyota Camry driven by Michael Waltrip and fielded by MWR, the #00 Aaron's Dream Machine Toyota Camry driven by David Reutimann and fielded by MWR, the #47 Little Debbie® Toyota Camry driven by Marcos Ambrose fielded by JTG- Daugherty Racing through a technical alliance with MWR, and the NASCAR Nationwide Series #99 Aaron's Dream Machine.

Hughes said he has been very pleased with Jet Edge's X-Stream waterjet pump and with Jet Edge's performance in general.

"We would absolutely, definitely recommend the X-Stream pump to others. The productivity improvements and cost savings are very measurable. Jet Edge's service has been fantastic and any components we've needed to get in have always been in stock. We have nothing to complain about."

Mobile Waterjet Cutting System Introduced by Jet Edge

Jet Edge, Inc. is pleased to introduce its new Hydraulic Versacutter portable waterjet cutting and beveling system.

The Jet Edge Hydraulic Versacutter is a hydraulically controlled mobile waterjet system that moves along rigid or flexible track to cut flat or curved surfaces. It cuts with a 60,000 psi (4,100 bar) abrasive waterjet.

The Versacutter is ideal for cutting pipelines, steel reinforced concrete, reactor vessels and fabricated metal structures. It cuts without flames and does not generate heat. This makes it possible for operators to cut in areas where flames are restricted. It also eliminates heat-affected zones.

Jet Edge's Hydraulic Versacutter water jet system is powered by Jet Edge's 60,000 psi (4,100 bar) waterjet intensifier pumps, which are available in electric or diesel models up to 280HP.

Like all Jet Edge products, the Hydraulic Versacutter is proudly made in the U.S.A.
