All Roads Lead to Jet Edge Waterjet Systems...Normally

Normally all roads lead to Jet Edge, but a doozy of a storm last night knocked down a main power transmission line that crossed every highway into St. Michael, Minnesota from the south, causing the closure of every highway to our factory from the south.  Fortunately, I-94 remained opened so those of us who live to the south of Jet Edge were able to get to work supporting our water jet systems customers through some creative navigating.

Jet Edge was spared from the storm's wrath, but many of our neighbors could be without power for days.  We're grateful that we weathered the storm, and we're especially thankful to the first responders and power company crews who are putting in a very long day today.

We tip our hat to the Wright County Sheriff's Department and Highway Department, as well as the Hennepin County Sheriff's Department and Highway Department, City of St. Michael, Xcel Energy®, Wright-Hennepin Electric and everyone else who is working hard today to clean up after the storm. Water Quality Requirements for UHP Water Jet Systems

Water quality is very important to the success of your waterjet cutting operation. Poor water quality can dramatically reduce the lifespan of waterjet components such as seals, orifices and check valves, eating into your profits and productivity.

Before you install a water jet system, have your water tested by a commercial company that specializes in water filtration.  If your water does not meet the water quality requirements for waterjet systems, they can advise you on how to properly filter it.

Change Your Waterjet Pump Water Filters at Least Every 250 Hours of Operation

Changing water filters on a waterjet intensifier pump is easy.

Be sure to change the water filter(s) in your waterjet intensifier pump after every 250 hours, or more frequently depending on your local water conditions.

If your water inlet pressure is low, a dirty filter may be the culprit.

See your waterjet pump maintenance manual for instructions on monitoring and changing filters.

How to Prevent Water Jet Abrasive Clogs

Here are some steps water jet operators can take to prevent abrasive clogs and clogged nozzles:

1. Use quality water jet abrasive from a reputable supplier.

2. Don't let debris get into the abrasive hopper when you fill it.  Even a tiny piece of packaging debris can clog your tubing. If you do get such a clog, check the elbow on the bottom of your bulk abrasive hopper and also your mini hopper.

3. Keep your abrasive dry.

3. Use the right orifice/nozzle combination. In general, the nozzle should be 3X larger than the orifice.

4. Use the proper size orifice for the abrasive grit you are using.

5. Maintain a proper standoff from the work surface to prevent the water flow from being blocked.

6. Replace worn orifices to prevent water from backing up into the mixing chamber.

7. And, of course, be sure to read and understand your waterjet manufacturer's manuals and take advantage of their training opportunities.

During EASTEC, Jet Edge will perform live 5-axis abrasive waterjet cutting demonstrations on its premiere 90,000 psi (6200 bar) EDGE X-5® 5-axis waterjet with Aquavision Di control and Closed Loop Filtration System.  The waterjet manufacturer also will showcase its new low-cost BOSS-CUTTER™ waterjet system, and its 90,000 psi X-Stream intensifier pumps.

EDGE X-5® 5-Axis Waterjet

Jet Edge’s EDGE X-5® 5-axis waterjet cuts precise taper-free parts from virtually any material.  The system is capable of cutting sophisticated 3D parts such as impellers and bevels up to 50°.   This workhorse waterjet system is designed to provide years of dependable service in harsh industrial environments.  Its sturdy design separates the motion system from the catcher tank, eliminating vibration and ensuring maximum part quality.  The EDGE X-5 utilizes the Aquavision® Di industrial PC controller.  It is ball-screw driven for optimal precision and features direct-couple AC brushless digital servo motors and single or double carriages. Critical bearing components are protected with heavy metal covers with brush seals and positive air pressure. The Jet Edge EDGE X-5 waterjet machine is available in many sizes, from 5’x5’ (1500 mm x1500 mm) to 24’x13.’ (7300 mm x 3900 mm) An optional second cutting head can be added to double productivity.

BOSS-CUTTER™ Waterjet System

Designed especially for cost-conscious shops with limited ­floor space, Jet Edge’s BOSS-CUTTER waterjet system cuts parts up to 6” thick from virtually any material. The BOSS-CUTTER is available in two sizes: 40”x40” (1000 mm x 1000 mm) or 60” X 60” (1500 mm x 1500 mm). It can be configured for both abrasive waterjet cutting and water-only cutting (abrasive is added when cutting hard materials such as metals; soft materials such as foam can typically be cut with water only). The system comes standard with a 30hp Jet Edge ECO-JET direct-drive pump, but can be upgraded to any of Jet Edge’s 55,000 psi (3800 bar) pumps. Jet Edge offers both direct-drive pumps or hydraulic intensifier pumps, available in 30-280hp models.  The BOSS-CUTTER is controlled with a Windows® PC and includes FlashCut Pro-Series Stepper Controller, FlashCutCNC software and IGEMS path generation software.

Jet Edge X-Stream® Waterjet IntensifierPump

Jet Edge’s 100hp, 90KSI (75kw, 6200 bar), X-Stream® xP90-100 waterjet intensifier pump is capable of producing 90KSI (6200 bar) and supports 75KSI (5200 bar) continuous operating pressure.  The X-Stream achieves much faster cutting speeds and drastically lowers operating costs compared to traditional 60KSI (4100 bar) water jet pumps, enabling users to increase productivity and reduce part costs.

  

The X-Stream produces 50% more pressure than a 60KSI (4100 bar) intensifier pump, resulting in a 40-50% increase in productivity for many materials. Compared to a 60KSI (4100 bar) pump, typical operating pressures of 75KSI (5200 bar) use 30% less water, 30% less power, and up to 50% less abrasive, resulting in a 40% reduction in operating costs. The xP90-100 is capable of producing flow rates of 1.45gpm (5.49 L/m) and supports up to a .017” (.43 mm) orifice.  Fittings and tubing are rated for 100KSI (6900 bar). The X-Stream is backed by nearly 10 years of extensive research and development in hyper-pressure technology.  The X-Stream also is available in a 50hp (37kw) model.

U.S. Ambassador to China Max Baucus Visits Jet Edge's Shanghai Showroom

U.S. Ambassador to China Max Baucus visited Jet Edge’s Shanghai office Dec. 1 during a tour of the AMT Shanghai Technology and Service Center.  During his visit, Mr. Baucus was treated to a live waterjet cutting demonstration in Jet Edge’s demonstration lab, where Jet Edge presented the ambassador with a waterjet cut state seal of his home state of Montana.

            Jet Edge, headquartered in St. Michael, Minn. U.S.A., opened its China sales, service in showroom in 2011 to meet the growing demand for American-made water jet cutting technology in China.

Jet Edge Awarded Patent for Water Jet Seal

Jet Edge, Inc. announced today that the United States Patent and Trademark Office has issued the waterjet manufacturer a patent for a high pressure fluid sealing mechanism designed by Jet Edge R&D Engineer Michael Wheeler.

Jet Edge’s proprietary high pressure fluid sealing mechanism (U.S. Patent 8,333,387) improves waterjet seal life by providing robust Metal-on-Metal sealing without the use of conventional plastic seals.  This technology uses two convex curved surfaces in single line contact with one another to seal ultra-high pressure (UHP) fluid at static pressures up to 130,000 psi. “Jet Edge’s revolutionary Metal-on-Metal sealing technology marks a tremendous breakthrough in waterjet technology,” said Jet Edge President Jude Lague. “With it, we are able to offer one of the longest seal lives in the industry, which translates into higher productivity and lower maintenance costs for our customers.”

Jet Edge initially developed the Metal-on-Metal seal to meet the increased performance demands of its X-Stream (XP) pressure intensifier pumps, which produce dynamic cutting pressures of 75,000 psi.  The technology has proven so successful that the waterjet manufacturer has expanded its use into additional product lines, including its ECO-JET direct drive pumps and several of its 60,000 psi intensifier pumps.

With its Metal-on-Metal sealing technology, Jet Edge has been able to eliminate static seals in its XP intensifiers and ECO-JET direct drive pumps, Wheeler noted.

“This has effectively cut the number of seals that can fail or need to be changed in half,” Wheeler said.  “I've assembled and disassembled these seals countless times and most of the time a quick cleaning of the surfaces with a Scotch-Brite® pad and a fresh coat of Blue Lube is all the maintenance that's ever needed.  The Metal-on-Metal seals that are part of the cylinders in our R&D ECO-JET have at least 40 million pressure cycles on them.”

Wheeler noted that it took a tremendous team effort to develop the technology and achieve the patent.

“I want to thank Jude Lague for funding the research, development, and legal work that lead to this patent, [Jet Edge Engineering Manager] Dave Lafavor for encouraging the research, [former Jet Edge employee] Reynold Sacquitne for his help in testing and troubleshooting the technology, [Jet Edge machinist] Brian Wallace for his excellent job machining the prototypes that lead to this technology, and [attorney] Paul Grunzweig for helping us find our way through the legal process of writing and obtaining the patent,” he said.

Jet Edge Mid Rail Gantry Waterjet System


Capable of producing complex parts out of virtually any material, the Jet Edge Mid Rail Gantry waterjet cutting machine features an exposed tank that easily accommodates overhead loading. It comes standard with one abrasivejet cutting head; a second cutting head can be added to increase productivity. Optional mirroring capabilities make it possible to cut part cycle time in half.

The Mid Rail Gantry is ball-screw driven for higher accuracy. Its sturdy heavy-wall tubular steel construction eliminates vibration and increases longevity. The Mid Rail Gantry utilizes an industrial PC controller and can be configured so that all three axes are fully programmable (Z optional). It also features direct-couple AC brushless digital servo motors and single or double carriages. Critical bearing components are protected with heavy metal covers with brush seals and positive air pressure. The Jet Edge Mid Rail Gantry waterjet machine is available in many sizes, including 5’x5’, 5’x13’, 8’x5’, 8’X13’, 13’x13’, 21’x5’, 21’X13’ and 24’x13’.

X-Stream Waterjet Intensifier Pumps

Jet Edge will exhibit its 100hp, 90KSI X-Stream xP90-100 waterjet intensifier pump. Jet Edge’s X-Stream pumps are capable of producing 90,000 psi and support 75,000 psi continuous operating pressure. The X-Stream achieves much faster cutting speeds and drastically lowers operating costs compared to traditional 60KSI water jet pumps, enabling users to increase productivity and reduce part costs.

The X-Stream produces 50% more pressure than a 60,000 psi intensifier pump, resulting in a 40-50% increase in productivity for many materials. Compared to a 60,000 psi pump, typical operating pressures of 75,000 psi use 30% less water, 30% less power, and up to 50% less abrasive, resulting in a 40% reduction in operating costs. The xP90-100 is capable of producing flow rates of 1.45gpm and supports up to a .017” orifice. Fittings and tubing are rated for 100KSI. The X-Stream is backed by nearly 10 years of extensive research and development in hyper-pressure technology. The X-Stream is also available in a 50hp model.
